Rep. Williams Joint Public Hearing Aging & Older Services Human Services

Aug. 24, 2021 / Embed

I participated in an Aug. 23 joint hearing of the House’s Aging & Older Adults Services and Human Services committees (both of which I am a member) and the Senate’s Aging & Youth, and Health & Human Services committees about the current negotiations of the PA Department of Human Services (DHS) to extend its contract with Maximus as the Independent Enrollment Broker for seniors and adults with disabilities. The complaints about Maximus have been legend, from calls to our legislative offices to complaints made to Area Agencies on Aging and those made in review hearings. I have not heard from anyone who has had a favorable view or experience with Maximus in getting enrolled for services in the Commonwealth. In fact, we heard the testimony of Tammy Schwab, the caregiver and mother of her daughter Tenielle, an adult with disabilities. She recounted in great detail her devastating encounters with Maximus for nearly a year as the company lost paperwork, denied claims for failure to submit already submitted paperwork, and a never-ending loop of dead-end interactions with Maximus all while trying to provide constant, daily care to Tenielle. Despite these horrific reviews from those truly in need, DHS intends to renew its contract with the Virginia-based company and actually increase the company’s responsibilities. Wanting the public to hear first-hand the experiences in our area of the state, I asked Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia to give us some specific examples of the dereliction of Maximus. I won’t stop fighting for our seniors, adults with disabilities and their families to ensure that they have access to their rightful services.
